A WeChat Mini Program that turns cycling into a social ritual, letting urban riders discover, ride, and connect in real time.
Background
Cycling has quietly become one of the most popular ways for young urban dwellers to stay active and unwind. Yet most riders still set out alone, with no easy way to find people nearby who share the same route or pace. Riding was born to answer a simple question: how can a city ride feel less solitary and more social? Built as a WeChat Mini Program, it meets riders exactly where their social life already lives, removing the friction of downloading yet another standalone app.
Challenge
Designing for movement is unforgiving. The interface had to surface live data — speed, altitude, distance, and the real-time position of fellow riders — at a glance, often when the phone is mounted on handlebars and the user is in motion. We needed to balance a dense, map-driven experience with the lightweight, instant-launch expectations of a Mini Program, while making the leap from a solo tracker to a genuine social network feel effortless and safe.
Action
We anchored the experience around a live map where every rider appears as a glowing marker, turning an ordinary route into a shared, living space. A single hold-to-record control lets riders start and stop a session without taking their eyes off the road, while key metrics stay legible against a high-contrast dark theme tuned for outdoor sunlight — paired with a clean light mode for everyday browsing.
To spark connection, we designed a frictionless "Team Up" flow: a short team code and a WeChat QR invite bring friends into a ride within seconds. Speed leaderboards add a playful, competitive edge, and a rich sharing module lets riders post their route, distance, and photos straight to WeChat Moments — turning every ride into an invitation for the next one.
Results
Riding reframes cycling as a connected, everyday social activity rather than a solo workout. The unified visual system — confident greens against deep neutrals, generous data typography, and a tactile core interaction — gives the product a distinct identity that feels at home both on the road and inside WeChat. The result is a Mini Program that lowers the barrier to riding together and gives modern city riders a reason to never ride alone.
